FAQs
What's an unconference?
An unconference is an attendee-led conference. Attendees set the agenda on the day and host their own 25 minute sessions on whatever topic they like, while others freely drop into sessions that interest them.
Who will be attending?
We encourage general insurance professionals from different roles, companies and sectors to attend to provide a diverse range of discussion and ideas.
What are some examples of sessions?
There is no specific format, but interactive sessions that encourage discussion work well. Here are some ideas from last year's unconference:
- Show and tell - share a project, experience or demo, or invite others to share theirs (eg Project management war stories; Returning to work well)
- Brainstorming ideas (eg Experimentation to unlock innovation)
- Teach/learn how to do something (eg How to build a coding mindset)
- Help me solve a problem/question (eg The dangers of offshoring)
-
Group discussion/debate on an interesting topic (eg The poverty premium - what's 'fair'?)
Who can host a session?
Anyone. You can host on your own or with other attendees. You don't have to be an expert either - you can use the session as a way to harness the knowledge from others in the room.
Do I have to host a session?
There's no pressure to host. If you're not hosting, keep checking the agenda to decide on what to attend, as it may change throughout the unconference. You are welcome to join or leave sessions part-way through - whatever works for you.
How many sessions can I host?
As many as you like.
How do I host a session?
You can plan your session in advance or create one on the fly (eg if you think of an interesting idea that you want to explore further, or you're having a great conversation that you want to extend). Feel free to contact us to suggest, discuss or collaborate on ideas.
An agenda will be posted with the session titles, locations and times. Please speak to the LCP team to add your session.
Do I need to prepare for my session?
Not necessarily. If it's a brainstorm or spontaneous idea, you can just see where the discussion goes. If it's a show-and-tell, you might prefer to think about what you are presenting beforehand.
We suggest giving a brief introduction to the topic at the start of your session to kick things off, but how you run it depends on what you want to get out of it.
Flip charts and screens will be available. There will be tables of up to 10, which can be rearranged to suit your session.
Can I change my session?
Yes. At any time, you can change your session time or topic, cancel it, extend it, break it into smaller groups, re-run it or merge with another similar session. The LCP team will be on hand to help you update the agenda accordingly.
What if there isn't enough to fill a session?
You don't have to use up the full 25 minutes. If you reach a natural conclusion early, people can have a break or join another session. And if it looks like it will run over because you're having interesting conversations, that's no problem, you can simply keep going.
