How Visualise helped our client react quickly and generate an additional £30m in investment returns over 2020

The background

Many of our DB scheme trustee clients experienced a worsening in their funding position in March 2020 (along with most investors across the globe due to the Covid-19 pandemic).

Our solution

Our intuitive, real-time technology solution, Visualise, allowed us to give day-by-day updates to all our clients and closely monitor key metrics. Clients also had direct, anytime access to that information, allowing them to make quicker and more informed decisions during an unprecedented period of economic and social turbulence.

We saw that we needed to take quick and decisive action to help our client not only maintain their positions, but where possible to improve on them. For all of our clients, we established lines of communications whilst our advisors were also adjusting to a new working environment during lockdown. Using technology was essential to our quick reactions: we arranged additional (virtual) meetings and used live real-time information from Visualise to help our client react to a rapidly changing world.

The outcome

As just one example (which was fairly typical across the schemes we work with), we helped the trustees to quickly implement two key decisions:

  • Re-invest into their equity portfolio following the market falls.
  • Increase the inflation hedging ratio (locking-in the significant falls in inflation expectations).

By being proactive, moving quickly and not “sitting on the fence”, we helped our client generate an additional £30m in investment returns over 2020. We took similar action across dozens of other schemes of all sizes.
