LCP Delta has been successful in receiving funding from round 4 of Ofgem’s Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) as part of a project with the aim to deploy new and cost-effective alternate uses of gas infrastructure.
Lead by National Gas, the Alt Pipe project involves three partners, LCP Delta, EA Technology and Ramboll UK.
As the owner of the National Transmission System, National Gas is committed to responsibly managing redundant assets in a manner that contributes to a sustainable and lower carbon future by decommissioning them responsibly, refurbishing them for re-use where viable and changing their purpose where possible. This discovery phase of the project will identify decommissioned elements of redundant pipework on the system and explore the potential of repurposing these for alternative uses. This could include transport and/or storage of energy, fuel, water or data among others.
Tom Veli, LCP Delta, commented:
“We are transitioning to an energy system that will be less reliant on natural gas and this means that there is a risk of stranding previous customer investment into the gas network when there’s the possibility to repurpose such assets that can still play a significant role.
"This project aims to unlock the potential opportunity to use this for new types of energy and support decarbonisation in the UK. We will be able to go beyond theory to test what will work which will be critical to making sure that the solutions work in the real world and can be replicated across the country.”
