LCP Health Analytics working on new AI initiative to transform urgent and emergency care
Health analytics Health equity ImpactNHS North East London in collaboration with Health Navigator and UCLPartners have today (Thursday 12 December) launched a new AI initiative to transform urgent and emergency care in North East London. The three-year programme will be providing preventative care for patients with long-term conditions and LCP Health Analytics will play a key role in measuring and evaluating its success.
LCP will be working with THIS.Institute to independently and objectively assess the impact and effectiveness of the AI programme on the urgent and emergency care programme. They will do this by designing and delivering an effective Real World Evidence (RWE) evaluation approach, which involves using data collected from real-life settings, rather than controlled clinical trials. They will also produce data for regular ongoing learning, and insights to improve the impact and effectiveness of the AI for Urgent and Emergency Care programme, creating a ‘learning health system’.
The programme uses routinely collected local hospital data to create bespoke machine learning algorithms that predict high-intensity users of unplanned care – people who often seek emergency or urgent healthcare services without appointments – up to six months in advance. These patients are then offered support via targeted, phone-based clinical coaching with trained healthcare professionals (clinical coaches). Clinical coaches work with patients to self-manage their conditions, improve health outcomes, and reduce their chances of unplanned hospital visits, admission, and extended hospital inpatient spells.
The work will be carried out across four workstreams including analysing whether there is a reduction in unplanned hospital admissions, how well the intervention is adopted, whether it improves patients knowledge and confidence to manage their own health, and finally an economic evaluation.
Ben Bray, Partner and Project Lead in LCP’s Health Analytics team, commented: “We are really excited to be a partnering on a project which could have a major impact on reducing wait lists. We are looking forward to undertaking together with THIS.Institute a robust and independent evaluation to assess the impact and effectives of the AI for the urgent and emergency care programme. By gathering this critical evidence, we are hoping we will help enable crucial learnings and best practice to be scaled across the NHS, as well as help shape future polices for effective, proactive care.
