Analysis and insights of the consumer economics of owning low-carbon technologies across five markets and six customer segments.

The client background

Our client is a successful international electrical wholesaler, whose products include many low-carbon technologies, such as heat pumps, EV chargers and solar PV and battery systems. They wanted to know where best to focus their sales efforts. They subscribe to several of LCP Delta’s research subscription services, but wanted to work with us to provide something custom to them.

What the client needed and their key question(s)

Our client wanted to know which of the markets and customer segments that they addressed offered the greatest value to owners of PV and battery systems, EV chargers or heat pumps. Of particular interest was the impact of national regulations and subsidies, as well as synergies enabled by ownership of multiple assets, for example the increase in self-consumption of PV generation with EV or heat pump ownership.

Our solution

We produced a report for their strategy board summarising key drivers and barriers to uptake of PV and battery systems, EV chargers and heat pumps, in their four main European markets and the USA. We consulted with our client’s country experts to define archetypal customers. For each of these customers we evaluated the payback time of PV systems with different assets under ownership, and heat pump running cost savings. By drawing on LCP Delta’s existing research base and techno-economic models, we were able to deliver this project cost efficiently. Following on from this we have worked with our client to test a web-based policy and regulations tracker tool fed by LCP Delta’s research.

Our impact

Our client is now using our analysis and advice on low-carbon technologies to inform its strategy, focussing sales efforts on the key markets and technologies that we expect to be the best growth opportunities.
