The background
Hungary has experienced a significant increase in solar PV capacity in the last 4 to 5 years. This has caused significant issues for the Hungarian Network Operators, to the point that a moratorium on all new network connections for solar PV systems in 2022, which has now ended. The British Embassy saw an opportunity for UK companies, with significant expertise and experience in this area, to support the Hungarian market to alleviate these issues. It would also provide an opportunity to increase exports in the region and increase the speed of Hungary’s transition away from Russian natural gas.
What the client needed and their key question(s)
- What are the key challenges that the Hungarian network operators that led to the moratorium on new grid connections for solar PV?
- What expertise does the UK have that can help alleviate these challenges?
- Which UK-based companies are best placed to export their capabilities to the Hungarian market?
Our solution
LCP Delta created a long list of UK-based companies with experience in electricity flexibility and network services. Following calls with Hungarian stakeholders to understand their needs, we shortlisted companies that were best suited to support the Hungarian Network Operators and alleviate network challenges.
At the request of the Hungarian Energy Regulator (MEKH), LCP Delta also facilitated a workshop between key Hungarian and UK stakeholders in the field of DSO flexibility markets. This included stakeholders from the respective regulators, DSOs and other experts in this sector and explored how DSO flexibility procurement is incorporated into the planning and operation of DNOs in GB.
Our impact
Our work showcased the UK’s experience and expertise in electricity flexibility, transmission and distribution network management to Hungarian stakeholders. As a result, The British Embassy are in the process of engaging the shortlisted UK companies offering them key contacts and links to enter into the Hungarian market.
