LCP Delta identified key policy and practical lessons from this UK Government project to inform wider heat pump rollout and share best practice.
The client background
The UK Government’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ, previously BEIS) commissioned a major heat pump demonstration project in 2020. The project involved recruiting households, technical surveys and the installation of almost 750 heat pumps in UK homes. The goal was to increase understanding of the technical and practical feasibility of a large scale roll out of heat pumps.
What the client needed and their key question(s)
The project sought to draw lessons from each part of the heat pump journey: recruiting households to have a heat pump installation, surveying homes, installing heat pumps and monitoring heat pump performance. Unlike previous trials, the focus of the project was understanding the challenges and successes of deploying heat pumps at scale in the UK. Lessons needed to be useful for both an industry and a policy audience.
Our solution
We were part of the Management Consortium that oversaw three delivery contractors working in different UK regions to deliver the heat pump installations. This enabled us to gather key insights at each stage of the project.
We also wrote a series of householder case studies to highlight successful installations in a variety of homes. Lastly, we produced heat pump user guides for participants.
Our impact
LCP Delta’s heat pump expertise and immersion in the project enabled us to produce high quality and insightful reports, highlighting key lessons for industry. We also drew on our analytical skills to identify key lessons from quantitative data collected through the project. Our understanding of the customer experience enabled us to create inspiring case studies and easy-to-understand user guides.
