Product analysis of phase-change material batteries

Energy transition

LCP Delta produced a market scan and product analysis for phase-change material (PCM) batteries for a technology manufacturer to inform their R&D (Research & Development) strategy.

The background

PCM absorb and release energy when they change state (e.g. from liquid to solid) and are therefore attracting increasing attention in their use as heat batteries. When combined with heating solutions such as heat pumps, PCM batteries can have several benefits such as increased efficiencies and reducing peak loads. However, there are a limited range of products available on the market for use in the heating market.

The key question

The client wanted to know what PCM products are available or in development for use in domestic space and water heating systems. The research aimed to understand the characteristics of these products as well as their commercial viability.

What was needed

The study needed to provide a comprehensive view of the range of PCM materials, how these could be used alongside low carbon heating systems, different use cases and the market maturity of these technologies. The client was also interested in understanding likely costs and benefits of different products and any relevant standards.

What we did

To answer the client’s questions, LCP Delta carried out extensive desk-based research to understand the broad range of PCM products available or under development. This included detailed technical research to understand product specification as well as wider market research and financial analysis.

The LCP Delta difference

LCP Delta’s deep understanding of heating technologies allowed us to carry out detailed research into this topic. Building on our understanding of key players and products in this field, we carried out bespoke research including interviews with key market players. Our research findings were presented back to the client, highlighting opportunities and challenges presented by PCM products.
